Gateways of opportunity.
Juarez is pretty famous for their Big X, word has it you can see it from space. And the writing on the mountain ‘read the bible it’s true” ranks pretty high too. The Cathedral downtown is featured in many depictions of Juarez. The Benito Juarez Monument for the city’s namesake. But only slightly less well known is this, La Puerta (The Door). What you’ve never heard of it? Me either.
This art installation is right off the highway that heads south out of town. Highway 45 takes you to Samalayuca or even Chihuahua. Sitting at the top of the bluffs overlooking the city is this big yellow door frame. I ventured out there one day to see what it was. I tried to find out when it was made, who made it, why it was made. But this seems to be one of life’s great mysteries. I was told it represents the gateway. Either the gateway into Mexico. Or the gateway into the United States. Not sure which. Both maybe.
One thing I like about this huge art installation, it’s always open, welcoming people. Just like most people I met in Juarez. A good representation of the kindness and hospitality of the Mexican people. Was everyone awesome and forthright? No. Just like not everyone you know is kind and hospitable. This was and is our opportunity to point people to Christ. Who is always open, welcoming, kind, hospitable.
When I was visiting Juarez recently I grabbed some post cards featuring a few landmarks. Would love to mail you one. Click here to share your mailing address, plus, I have a few new options for you to sign up for.
